Selling
your Home?
Set the Stage...Starting with your Kitchen!
The kitchen is the heart of the home and buyers pay particular attention to kitchens. They
may forget there’s a bidet in the powder room or whether there’s a closet in the
foyer, but they will remember your kitchen...and any toast crumbs left on your
counter!
Here are some tips to stage your kitchen when you’re selling your home:
- Remove your coffee bean grinder, espresso
machine, mandoline, citrus juicer, pressure cooker, avocado slicer, and other latest and
greatest kitchen gadgets from your countertops. Buyers like to see lots of countertop
surface space – not your prized “La Pavoni Professional Espresso
Machine”.
- Replace old cabinet hardware –
upgrading drawer and cabinet pulls is a pretty quick and easy fix. Cabinet handles are
considered “the jewellery of the kitchen”. Check local home improvement
stores; and online outlets like Wayfair and Amazon. If you want to “make a
statement with your handles” check out Etsy, Rejuvenation, West Elm, and Top Knob.
Lee Valley in Waterloo has a large selection of kitchen hardware too.
- Swap out a scratched and stained sink with a
brand spanking new sink. Presto! Instant improvement!
- Give your cabinets a facelift! Kitchen
cabinet refacing can completely transform your kitchen. A little tuck here, a little nip
there! Oops, wrong facelift! Seriously, though, refacing your kitchen cabinetry is a
super way to achieve a totally remodelled look – without the hefty price tag of
new cabinets.
- Remove and reorganize furniture if your
kitchen space seems cramped. Switch out 6 chairs for 4 chairs around your breakfast
table.
- Ensure everything in the kitchen is
spotless and shiny. Trade Secret: pay particular attention to the base
cabinet under the sink. This cabinet door is the one most often opened by buyers.
(Pssst! The underwear drawer in your bedroom is likely right up there too!).
- Replace kitchen mats if they are
worn. Check out local hardware stores (Swanson’s Home Hardware
on Park Street has lots of home décor items); and local garden centres like
Meadow Acres Garden Centre. Zehr’s Marketplace offers plenty of options
too.
- Clean your dishwasher. You’ll be
surprised what a gunky mess it might be! Remove the racks and baskets. Use a wooden
barbecue skewer or toothpick to clean out debris in the spinning arm. Remove the filter
and use a toothbrush to scrub the filter and the drain area with baking soda paste. Soak
a cloth with white vinegar and a few squirts of lemon juice and wipe the seal, sides,
edges, utensil holders, racks, buttons, and panel. Pour a couple of cups of vinegar into
the bottom of your dishwasher and run the cycle.
- Lastly, give your kitchen “The Smell
Test”. No buyer wants a whiff of last night’s leftovers,
garbage, recycling, or pet-related smells.
- When a showing is scheduled, turn on the
lights, fling open the curtains and raise the blinds. You want your kitchen to be shown
in the best light possible.
These simple improvements can make an enormous difference in how
your kitchen looks to buyers. If your kitchen sparkles and shines, buyers will remember
it!
